Good omens for gasoline retailers, marketers, refiners: U.S. vehicle sales are up, especially trucks and SUVs. The overall fleet in operation on the road will hit an all-time high this year. Hybrid sales dropped. And U.S. gasoline demand probably bottomed out in 2011, to eke out a little growth in 2012.

Last year's national average retail gasoline margin writhed between fewer than four pennies to over 32¢ gal., but achieved 14.6¢ for the year - an all-time high. While a chunk was eaten by higher card fees, this record retail margin was no small achievement against shrinking demand.
